Mediarada social protection council for freedom of speech and Ukrainian Deaf People Community (UDPC) claimed about violations of the rights of deaf people by Ukrainian TV broadcasting companies.

Such statement has been made by Mediarada Coordinator Irina Tiran, the lawyer Irina Chepchina and the editor of the newspaper for deaf people “Our Life” Marina Makukha in today’s Kiev press conference.

“Severe violations of deaf people’s rights are committed by key Ukrainian broadcasting companies and the governmental bodies which must regulate and control loyalty of deaf people. Ukrainian broadcasters do not posses even considered program policy touching upon deaf audience. Disparaging treatment of deaf audience by Ukrainian information resources led to this outrage. Deaf Ukrainians cannot get full information concerning all events happening in Ukrainian society,” stated Irina Tiran.

To participants’ opinion, Ukrainian TV channels must exceed the number of gesture-translated programs and improve the quality of creeping line. “The creeping line is very fast and repeated. The deaf person does not get the full information,’ said Mediarada Coordinator.

UDPC representatives propose to titrate in Russian as well as in Ukrainian and to enlarge the print size of the letters. “It is necessary to increase the number of popular science and kid’s programs with creeping line or gesture-translation. The gesture-translation is not only the communication source but the language for education as well,” stressed Makukha.
