President of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly Pierre Lellouche conveyed an official invitation to President Viktor Yushchenko to take part in the NATO Parliamentary Assembly's scheduled session, which will be held in Paris, France, in spring 2006 and will be the next step on the way to preparation of the NATO Summit.

As Mr Lellouche stressed at a final press conference in Kyiv, "NATO's doors are open for Ukraine and its accession to the Alliance depends on its own efforts". He promised NATO assistance in implementing economic reforms, utilization of excessive ammunition, which Ukraine possesses in amount of 1.5 M. tons, and fissile fuels.

The NATO PA President said NATO must assist Ukraine in overcoming Cold War remains and promote Ukraine's democratization on the way to the United Europe.

Summing up his visit to Ukraine, Pierre Lellouche said it is up to Ukraine to decide on being in NATO, to which end public debates and discussions should be staged on the regular basis.

Mr Lellouche expressed his hope that Ukraine would manage to hold the 2006 parliamentary elections honestly and transparently and stated NATO's readiness to dispatch its observers.
