Victor Yushchenko met with Humanitarian Vice Prime Minister Vyacheslav Kyrylenko, Youth and Sports Minister Yuri Pavlenko, Deputy Secretariat Chief of Staff Ivan Vasyunyk and members of the Ukraine Football Federation to discuss ways to develop sports and physical education in Ukraine.

The Head of State charged the Cabinet to elaborate a draft order to develop sports, protect and support athletes and coaches and develop Ukraine’s sports infrastructure.

“Each small village should have a gym. Each big city should have a sports palace and a stadium because a sports country is a promising country,” said Yushchenko.

The government has to hold an Organization Committee meeting to prepare Ukrainian athletes for Olympic, Paralympic and Deaflympic games. Yushchenko also charged the Cabinet to take all necessary measures to ensure our team’s successful participation in the Turin Winter Olympics.

The Head of State supported the initiative to engage Ukraine’s most prominent sportsmen and coaches to form a Council on Sports and Physical Education.

The President promised he would spare no effort for Ukraine to take part in a tender to host the 2012 Football Championship.

Yushchenko also supported the initiative of the Youth and Sports Ministry to reform sports and physical education and build ten bases to prepare athletes for summer and winter Olympics.
