The European Union is ready for rapprochement with Ukraine as it implements internal political and economic reforms, Vice President of the European Commission Siim Kallas said while speaking at the international conference "Ukraine is Watching in the Future: On the Way of Reforms" in Brussels on Thursday, Cabinet's press office informed.

According to Mr Kallas, the Orange Revolution opened many opportunities and produced many expectations. The main challenge, which the new power faces, is to justify these expectations and prove that there is no way back. "We really hope that Ukraine will realize its ambitions and joins the World Trade Organization by the end of the year", Mr Kallas noted.

As he stressed, the process of realization of the bipartite Ukraine - EU Action plan is rather good. First outcomes of the work in this direction will be summed up during the Ukraine - EU Summit on December 1. Mr Kallas stressed the need to further strengthen the legal system in Ukraine. According to him, combating corruption remains the main challenge for Ukraine as a whole and for its Government. "If this phenomenon fails to be overcome, it will endanger the whole process of reform", Siim Kallas emphasized.

According to him, the future elections in Ukraine will be the main test for maturity of the Ukrainian democracy. Touching on the future, he said it is difficult to speak about Ukraine's European integration perspectives. "Ukraine is a key partner of the European Union and the bilateral relations will deepen and strengthen as Ukraine is moving on the way of reforms".
