Within the framework of an official visit to Strasbourg, France, Speaker Vladimir Litvin met with President of the PACE Rene Van der Linden, the official site of the Cabinet of Ukraine reported.

Rene Van der Linden noted that monitoring of Ukraine should be understood as a support.

"We deal with a barometer, which shows the weather in Ukraine", Litvin said. According to him, this is how the Verkhovna Rada views the PACE. "Without PACE and the European Council we would not manage to overcome obstacles that easily", the Speaker noted.

The parties also discussed the political situation in Ukraine, the Constitutional reforms' results, the Government's reshuffles, and political moods before the 2006 parliamentary elections.

"Hence it's hard but very important for the politicians to avoid populism and promises", Litvin notes. According to him, the Parliament faces a task to elaborate and approve a real budget of development on the basis of an objective analysis of the current economic condition jointly with the Government.

"Ukraine welcomes the international observers, as it also seeks to the honest and democratic 2006 parliamentary elections and any assistance will be helpful", the Speaker stressed.

Litvin presented Rene Van der Linden with the Verkhovna Rada honorary document.
