Acting Minister for Foreign Affairs Borys Tarasyuk hopes that Ukrainian peacekeeping mission to Lebanon will go on. According to him, UN Secretary General Kofi Annan sounded positively on the Ukrainian presence in Lebanon, while meeting with Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko in New York.

As Borys Tarasyuk told the correspondent, he means to meet with the acting Defense Minister and discuss ways to settle the issue.

As reported, in August UN Secretariat sent a report to Ukraine on outcomes of a special check-up into the activity of the Ukrainian peacekeeping contingent in Lebanon, which revealed certain financial misappropriations by some officers of the Ukrainian battalion of the previous rotation. Criminal proceedings were instituted on the fact.

As the UN Secretariat noted, Ukraine met all demands and transparently investigated into the incident.

The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry and Defense Ministry are negotiating with the United Nations and other parties, engaged in the incident, with a view of revising the decision to cease the Ukrainian peacekeeping mission to Lebanon.
