Today the speaker of Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, Volodymir Litvin, has met the president of PACE Parliamentary Assembly, Rene van der Linden.

During the negotiations Litvin mentioned in particular that Ukraine seeks not to meet only formally the EU requirements but to fulfill them in reality. "We expect PACE to countermand monitoring of Ukraine after parliamentary elections-2006."

Linden in turns mentioned that "monitoring is conducted in order to help not to criticize." He stated PACE’s readiness "to monitor the elections of the next year."

During the meeting the representatives of the delegations shared the opinions concerning the social and political situation in Ukraine on the eve of the elections. The characteristic feature of this period, in Litvin’s opinion, is "great attention of post-soviet space and Europe" towards elections in Ukraine.

Rene van der Linden expressed assurance in the necessity of the completion of political reform in Ukraine and reminded about important recommendations of Venetian Commission concerning the reform and about importance to conduct the reform of the court system. He also claimed the deputies to press the government in order it would sign the EC Conventions as soon as possible.

In response to this statement, Litvin mentioned that "it is too early to speak about the end of the political reform," and added that "the recommendations of Venetian Commission were thoroughly examined by corresponding officials and probably will be passed as final Basic Law."
