Youth, Family and Sport Minister of Ukraine, Yuriy Pavlenko, has said Ukraine has not banned adoptions by foreigners, but will give preferential treatment to Ukrainian families applying to adopt a child. In the 5th Channel studio he said adoption procedures would be eased to reduce the waiting period for Ukrainian families from five-six years to several months, M&C News reported.

Pavlenko also added that Ukraine would join the Hague convention regulating procedures for international adoptions of children in September.

"The priority for the state today is national adoptions. First of all, we will create all the necessary conditions to enable every Ukrainian family to adopt a child as quickly and as easily as possible - a Ukrainian family to adopt a Ukrainian child.

At the present time, the law actually sets out the whole procedure, and this procedure can be completed in five or six months, all the necessary checks can be carried out and a child can be adopted.

As regards adoptions by foreigners, clearly we are not refusing them," pointed out the minister
