American-Ukrainian fund reported that tickets at the cost of $200 were distributed very quickly. The only possibility for the representatives of the Ukrainian Diaspora to see Yushchenko is to take part in the large mass meeting at the foot of the monument to Taras Shevchenko, which stands in the center of Washington, on Wednesday.
Both actions - the mass meeting at the foot of the monument and banquet in one of the most spacious halls of the US capital - are organized by "Victor Yushchenko meeting Committee", which includes 19 organizations of the Ukrainian Diaspora in the USA.
Yushchenko arrived in Washington on April 3. After meeting with President Bush at the White House, the Ukrainian president flew to Chicago. In his speech in Chicago, Yushchenko thanked the Ukrainian-American community for their financial and political support during the election campaign. There are nearly 100,000 Ukrainian-Americans in the Chicago area, 'Washington post" informed.
He called on his compatriots to live, work and invest in Ukraine and assured his audience the country was already changing. "We will curb corruption, we will curb poverty and we will have freedom of speech," he said.
After his speech in Chicago, Yushchenko arrived to Boston, where he was presented with the John Kennedy Profile Award.
Getting back to Washington Yushchenko will speak in Congress on Wednesday. Then he will take part in the mass meeting near Taras Shevchenko’s monument and in the evening will speak on the banquet in his honour.
