A criminal responsibility for production of poor-quality products may be introduced in Ukraine, according to a draft bill on safety and quality of foodstuffs, head of the State veterinary and sanitary service of Ukraine Ivan Bisyuk told a briefing on Wednesday.

“The new draft bill on production of poor-quality products provides for criminal responsibility with imprisonment. You understand that a man may use a product only once but remain invalid for the whole life. Therefore, it is necessary to introduce responsibility for such violations,” Bisyuk said.

Under current legislation, a producer of poor-quality products, which cause poisoning without a lethal outcome, faces a small fine of several tax-exempt minimums, the official reminded.

Bisyuk pointed out that the draft bill had been agreed with all ministries and agencies of interest and would come into force six months following its adoption.

He also expressed hope that the parliament will pass the draft bill in its first reading before summer vacations.
