3 January 2014, the frigate of Naval Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine "Hetman Sahaydachniy" with a helicopter Ka-27 and task force begins participation in the operation of the European Union to counter piracy off the coast of Somalia “EU NAVFOR ATALANTA”. It is reported by the Foreign Ministry of Ukraine press office.
Participation in the operation «EU NAVFOR ATALANTA» is carried out in accordance with the decree of the President of Ukraine "On direction of the national contingent of for Ukraine’s participation in "Ocean Shield" and the operation of the European Union “EU NAVFOR ATALANTA” and the Law of Ukraine "On approval of the decision of the President of Ukraine on direction of the national contingent for Ukraine's participation in " Ocean Shield" Operation and operation of the European Union “EU NAVFOR ATALANTA”.
The task of the national contingent while participating in operations is prevention and counteraction of piracy, protection of civilian ships that perform tasks in the framework of the World Food Programme, prevention and intervention in an attempt to commit acts of piracy or armed robbery, collaboration with countries, entities and organizations, which are presented in the region to combat acts of piracy.
