The Revenues and Duties Ministry of Ukraine has started legal proceedings in the United States and in Switzerland to protect the interests of Ukraine in the case of the misappropriation of over $200 million by a group of people, allegedly including two former Ukrainian prime ministers, Yulia Tymoshenko and Pavlo Lazarenko, Interfax-Ukraine informs.

The ministry instructed the Lawrence Graham LLP law firm (London, Britain) to act as lead counsel in coordinating the anticipated claims in a number of jurisdictions world-wide and to take all steps necessary to best protect the Ukrainian state's interest, the law firm reported on its Web site.

"We are pleased to have been instructed in this important case and we believe that our network of fraud and asset recovery lawyers around the world enables us to bring the right expertise together for an assignment of this nature," Senior Partner and Head of Fraud and Asset Recovery Andrew Witts, who leads the Lawrence Graham London team, said.

According to the law firm, the unlawful actions of the individuals involved in the alleged misappropriation have already been the subject of criminal investigations or proceedings in the US, Switzerland and Ukraine.

Lawrence Graham provided legal assistance for the foreign economic activity of Naftogaz Ukrainy in 2011 and 2012.

In addition, in April 2013, the holding signed a contract worth $200,000 with Lawrence Graham LLP to protect in court its stake in JKX Oil&Gas (JKX), a British oil and gas company with assets in Ukraine, under a lawsuit by Merchant International Company Ltd. (the United States).
