Due to the signing of the Association agreement with the European Union, rest homes for metal disabled may undergo changes in Ukraine,  Iryna Pinchuk, chief freelance psychiatrist of the Healthcare Ministry and director of the Ukrainian research institute for social and legal psychiatry and narcology, told a briefing, ForUm's correspondent reports.

"In the EU there are various types of halfway houses, like hostels or family care homes for mental patients. Thus, we are talking about a place to allow people to begin the process of reintegration with society, while still receiving monitoring and support," Pinchuk explained.

According to her, at the first stage of reformation, the number of beds in mental hospitals will be reduced, and rest homes for people with mental disorders will become smaller in size.

"I believe Ukraine is ready for this... Thus, rest homes will be partially disbanded and modified," Pinchuk specified and added that this and other questions of reformation of the mental health services in accordance with the EU standards would be discussed at the next meeting of the Ministry's staff.
