The tourist industry may become one of the most powerful engines for the development of Ukraine’s economy. This is indicated by the attendees of the II Kyiv International Tourist Forum, which opened in Kyiv Oct. 10, the Information-analytical Bulletin of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine says.

The World Tourism Organization has ranked Ukraine 9th in Europe by the number of incoming tourists. Given the climatic conditions and number of World Heritage Sites, Ukraine can double the number of foreign tourists to 50 million annually by 2022. This, in turn, will increase total number of jobs in the tourism industry from 400,000 to 1 million, as well as boost revenues from 1.5 billion UAH to 5 billion UAH.

Experts say the potential of the Ukrainian Black Sea coast and the Carpathian Mountains can be very attractive to tourists. They emphasize that the government needs to provide all forms of state assistance to make the Crimea and the Carpathians year-round resorts.

To this end, the regions should be developed not only as resort attractions, but also as a venue for year-round music, theater, carnival festivals, competitions, various sports and cultural events.
Tourism experts say bringing Ukrainian legislation in the field of tourism and resorts in compliance with European standards is necessary.

Experts at the Union for Development of Rural Green Tourism say that given its climatic conditions Ukraine has great potential for pursuing «green» tourism. There are some 950 sites of «green» tourism in the country and potentially 1 million homes from 6–7 million households in rural areas, which can receive tourists.

Tourist agency operators say the tourism business is promoted by successfully hosting major international sporting events in Ukraine.

According to UEFA, Ukraine and Poland in 2012 hosted one of the best European Football Championships in the history of the organization.
