Ukraine welcomes the agreements reached during negotiations in Geneva between Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation Sergey Lavrov and U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry on establishing international control over chemical weapons in Syria and its destruction in the shortest possible time.

This is stated in the comments of the information policy department of the Foreign Ministry of Ukraine on occasion of the publication of the UN report on the use of chemical weapons in Syria.

"For this purpose there should be involved the mechanisms of the UN Security Council and the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons, whose Executive Council Ukraine chairs now.
"Ukraine's Foreign Ministry condemns the use of chemical weapons near Damascus on August 21 this year, which was confirmed by the UN inspectors in the interim report of September 16. Ukraine's position is clear, which is that any use of weapons of mass destruction is a violation of international humanitarian law, and those responsible for their use should be brought to justice," the Ministry noted.

The Foreign Ministry hopes that the implementation of the agreements on chemical weapons will help to reduce the current level of tension between the parties to the armed conflict and further its address by the political and diplomatic means.
