Ukrainian foreign minister Leonid Kozhara stated that if Ukraine signs an agreement on association and a free trade area with the European Union, the decision to impose special duties on imported cars will be canceled automatically.

"We believe that such measures are temporary in nature, and if Ukraine signs an agreement on association and a free trade area with the EU, such measures will in fact be removed automatically," the minister told a briefing in Kyiv on Monday after the talks with his Japanese counterpart Fumio Kishida, Interfax-Ukraine reported.

In turn, the Japanese foreign minister said that his country was concerned about the introduction of special duties on cars and expressed the hope that Kyiv would review this decision.

Kozhara also noted that he explained economic reasons behind this decision and assured his Japanese counterpart that Ukraine would observe its WTO obligations.
