Kyiv and Brussels intend to hold a meeting of a high-level committee on energy issues soon, Interfax informs.

Ukrainian Energy Minister Eduard Stavytsky told Ukrainian journalists about this arrangement after a meeting with European Commissioner for Energy Gunther Oettinger.

He recalled that the idea of establishing such a committee came as a result of an energy conference, which was held in Brussels on May 3. “Consultations are currently held at the level of offices of the European Commission and the Fuel and Energy Ministry, during which we will work out an action plan for the work of this committee,” Stavytsky said.

According to the minister, the committee will be in charge of not only the issues of gas supply and liberalization of the gas market, but also the broader issues of liberalization of Ukraine’s energy market in general. “I am talking about electricity, gas market, and alternative sources,” he said.

Stavytsky believes that such a meeting could be held in Kyiv soon. “Two dates will be determined soon, which I will report to the president and the prime minister of Ukraine. This will be a very high level: at least several commissioners will be present at this committee,” the minister said.

He added that the committee will include EU Commissioner for Enlargement and European Neighborhood Policy Stefan Fule and EU Commissioner for Trade Karel De Gucht.

“This will take place before the summit in Vilnius, in September, and is to be chaired at least by Prime Minister Mykola Azarov,” Stavytsky said.
