A sculpture in honor of Swedish football fans who lived on Trukhaniv Island in Kyiv in summer during Euro 2012, has been unveiled on the island near the footbridge across the River Dnipro, the press service of Kyiv City State Administration reported on Sunday.

“It was a special period for Kyiv, in particular, the Kyiv fan-zone gathered a record number of visitors, and the camp on Trukhaniv Island was registered in the Guinness Book of World Records as the biggest camp of Swedish fans in the world. An amazing atmosphere of a sports holiday prevailed in Kyiv, in which football lovers from Sweden were active participants,” head of the Kyiv City State Administration Oleksandr Popov said during the unveiling of the monument, Interfax informed.

According to him, after the end of Euro 2012 friendly relations between the Ukrainian and Swedish parties continue.

“Today we are implementing a joint art project – the Ukraine-Sweden ‘Rock’n'Sich’ festival – on the first day of which we unveiled a monument in honor of the Swedish fans,” Popov said.

According to the press service, the work of creative duet Kostiantyn Skretutsky and Fedir Balandin was declared the best in a contest to select a monument. The proposed sculpture features a numeral 1 in the colors of the Swedish flag, and a second numeral in the colors of the Ukrainian flag (2). It symbolizes the year of the holding of the Euro championship in Ukraine, the score in the match between Ukraine and Sweden, as well as the number of the football fan – the twelfth player in a team.
