The CIS Heads of Government Council approved the protocol on accession of Uzbekistan to the Free Trade Area (FTA) of the Commonwealth, head of the CIS Executive Committee Sergei Lebedev said at the Council’s meeting in extended format, ForUm correspondent reports from Minsk.

The official said that Uzbekistan will become the 9th party to the agreement.

The head of the Executive Committee specified that Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan have also expressed a desire to further study the issue of accession to the treaty.

"If they join, the contract will cover all of the CIS in its current composition. That would be logical, since the FTA will provide the necessary conditions for the full and effective development of trade in the Commonwealth and create favorable conditions for the further deepening of integration on the basis of the WTO rules," Lebedev said.

He added that at the suggestion of Russia, the next meeting of the CIS Heads of Government Council will be held in the Russian Federation on November 20, 2013.
