President of Ukraine Viktor Yanukovych assured that the Ukrainian state will continue developing the Ukrainian language, at the same time ensuring the right of every citizen to linguistic and cultural identity.

It is said in his congratulatory message on the occasion of the Day of Slavic Writing and Culture, the President’s press service informs.

"Today we honor Christian educators Cyril and Methodius, who 1150 years ago brought Cyrillic alphabet on Ukrainian land, and with it - wisdom, faith, and a great culture of the Word. It has a decisive influence on the development of our and many other Slavic peoples who had the opportunity to actively create their own literature, philosophy, law and theology," congratulatory message of the President says.

Yanukovych noted that the Cyrillic alphabet contributed to the emergence in Europe of the mighty, culturally developed state - Kyiv Rus, from which Ukraine counts its 1025-year spiritual history in the fold of a Christian civilization.

"Traditions of Old East Slavic literature as the basis of Ukrainian literature have continued in modern times, enriching and expanding the spiritual and intellectual foundations of our statehood. As part of the European community, the state will continue developing the Ukrainian language, at the same time ensuring the right of every citizen to linguistic and cultural identity," the message reads.
