Secretary General of the Council of Europe Mr. Thorbjørn Jagland welcomes the decision of President Viktor Yanukovych on pardon of former interior minister Yuri Lutsenko, the Council of Europe press service informs.
"I welcome the decision of President Yanukovych to pardon former ministers Lutsenko and Filipchuk, and other four people. This is consistent with the spirit of the European Court of Human Rights," Mr. Jagland is cited.
He expressed the hope that Ukraine, in addition, will follow the principles of the European Court of Human Rights in the case of former Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko as well.
In addition, he stressed that the Council of Europe continues cooperating with the Ukrainian authorities to provide assistance and analysis of the judicial system reforms.
