Head of the EU Delegation to Ukraine Ian Tombinsky stated that Ukraine should at least begin to hold all necessary reforms before May to allow the signing of the Association Agreement with the EU in the current year.
"The statement on outcomes of the EU-Ukraine summit says that the work in this direction has begun and will last at least until May. And when the time comes, we may resume our work to receive a mandate of the European Commission to sign the Association Agreement," Tombinsky said in the interview with the Ukrainian TV channel on Thursday night.
He added that if Ukraine does not start carrying out the necessary reforms before May, there is a risk not to achieve the expected goal. Tombinsky noted that the implementation of reforms, which the EU pays attention to, will take time. And the reforms can not be finished in May, they should be continued.
The head of the EU Delegation recalled that issues related to electoral justice are one of the issues that must be solved by Ukraine for the signing of the Association Agreement. According to him, the possible release of former interior minister Yuri Lutsenko may become one of the results of the last EU-Ukraine summit.
The diplomat also added that the EU expects Ukraine to hold reforms in judiciary, to change role of the prosecutor's office and to take actions in the fight against corruption.
