Kyiv's Pechersky District Court has sentenced the former chief of the external surveillance department of the Ukrainian Interior Ministry, Oleksiy Pukach, to life in prison for killing journalist Georgy Gongadze.

The Court found that Pukach killed Gongadze for his professional activities on the night of 16th to 17th September 2000. Pukach had been instructed to do so by the former internal minister Yuri Kravchenko, who was found dead at his home near Kyiv with two gunshot wounds to the head on March 4, 2005.

In addition, according to investigators, Pukach kidnapped and beat another journalist Oleksiy Podolsky to put pressure on him due to his professional activity.
