Andriy Shevchenko refused to take a position as a head coach of Ukraine’s national football team, he said today after a meeting with the leadership of the Football Federation of Ukraine (FFU), the official website of the FFU reports.

"For many years, I played for the national team of Ukraine, and it was a great honor for me, because I played for my country. Today I am grateful to the Football Federation of Ukraine and its President Anatoly Konkov for the high level of trust that they gave me offering to coach the national team. I would like to express my gratitude to all football experts who supported or did not support my appointment to this position, because the opinions of these experts are very important for me," he noted.

According to Shevchenko, as of today, the opportunity to head the Ukrainian national football team is "a hasty step" for him.

"I hope that the FFU leadership will understand my decision. I am confident that the national team has a chance to get to the final of World Cup-2014. And I am always ready to support our team on the way to gain the best results," he concluded.
