Office of the High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in Belarus, Moldova and Ukraine states that about 1.5 thousand people apply for refugee status in Ukraine every year.

"In Ukraine, there are about 2.5 thousand persons who have refugee status, and about 1.5 thousand people apply for refugee status annually in Ukraine," adviser for Public Information Office of the High Commissioner for Refugees in Belarus, Moldova and Ukraine Oleksandra Makovska told a press club on the occasion of the International Day of United Nations.

Makovska also noted that each year, the UN High Commissioner for Human Refugees provides about 300 thousand dollars for the provision of social and medical assistance to such persons.
She stressed that the Office provides legal assistance to refugees and persons who apply for refugee status in Ukraine.

The organization also helps refugees to integrate into society, in particular, helps in learning the language and getting specialization and resettlement to a third country if a person cannot receive protection in Ukraine.
