Deputy chairman of the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar people Refat Chubarov does not support increasing of the percentage to grant a language status of regional, he told ForUm commenting on proposals of the working group to amend the law "On principles of the state language policy."
In his view, there was plenty of opportunities on the basis of ratified European Charter for regional or minority languages to solve all language issues in the country. "But for some reason, legislators chose another way, so we including indigenous people and minorities have become hostages between the state language and Russian," he said.
"If these amendments are adopted, the Crimean Tatar language will not be given an opportunity for revival and development. There will be problems with Romanian in Bukovyna and Hungarian in Transcarpathia. So it will increase tension in the society," Chubarov summed up.
