The State Service of Ukraine on Medicinal Products supports any effective mechanism of control over the sale of medicines containing codeine to the citizens in pharmacies, chairman of the Service Oleksiy Solovyov said.

In particular, prescription distribution can be such a tool. It may also be a quota on sale of a corresponding drug to one person.

"We support any tool to be implemented in practice and help to reduce the distribution of drugs containing codeine, which are not prescribed by a doctor," Solovyov said.

In June this year Russia banned the free sale of drugs containing codeine. Now, in Russia, all drugs for cough and pain, namely Pentalgin-H, Codelac, Solpadeine, Nurofen Plus and other drugs containing codeine, are available only by prescription.
