On the air of the Radio "Liberty" the head of the Main Directorate for Ensuring Access to Public Information of the Administration of President of Ukraine Denys Ivanesko said that there is a market competition on Ukrainian television market and if the viewer wants to receive information in a specific language, then the market will offer it.
Ivanesko commented on the statement of the head of the National Council on Television and Radio Broadcasting of Ukraine Volodymyr Manzhosov that, in accordance with the law on principles of national language policy, the National Council will cancel the column “language” in the licenses for TV channels.
"I think there should be a balance. You know that the President instructed the Cabinet to establish a working group, and it already begun its work. It should work out a program of development of the Ukrainian language and to provide for measures and adequate funding for the development of Ukrainian as the state language. And second, it should shape the market. If a viewer wants to receive information in Russian, Armenian, or in any other language, then the market will offer it to him. There should be freedom of information, freedom of proposals," Ivanesko said.
In turn, the chief editor of the Telekritika (Television Critic) project Natalia Lihacheva expressed the belief that after the cancellation of the column “language” in the licenses for TV channels, the majority of Ukrainian TV channels will use primarily Russian. She does not agree with the fact that solely market conditions should act in the media.
