At its extraordinary session on Monday, the Odesa City Council has adopted a decision to grant the Russian language the status of regional language in Odesa.

73 deputies out of 111 deputies present voted in favor of this decision (the total number of the Council deputies is 120).

The decision was adopted in the framework of the implementation of provisions of the law on the principles of national language police already entered into force.

During the discussion, the Council deputy Oleksiy Kosmin said that a term "languages of national minorities" appeared in the Ukrainian society in 2003.

"The main condition of the law is as follows: there must be more than 10% of the population in a region who consider the language their native to grant a certain language the status of the regional language. According to the latest census, Odesa is home to more than 10% of population who consider Russian their native language," he said.

Kosmin said that the new law provides new opportunities for city council for the development and protection of the Russian language.

The session was closed immediately after adoption of the decision.
