President of Ukraine Viktor Yanukovych signed the law on advocacy, advisor to the President of Ukraine - head of the President’s Administration Main Office for Judicial System Affairs Andriy Portnov told a briefing, ForUm correspondent reports.

According to him, the law provides for the granting of legal aid at state expense to those who are unable to afford an attorney. Such legal aid will be provided in case if a person is suspected of committing a criminal offense, as well as in case of administrative arrest or administrative detention.
The law also provides for the introduction of administrative responsibility of officials for the refusal or failure to provide timely answer to the attorney's request.

In addition, according to the Portnov, the law amends the internal advocacy. "According to the document, the attorneys shall have the right to create a central body of attorneys’ self-administration. In a few days, the law will come into force and after that all the Ukrainian attorneys, about 33 thousand, will be able to delegate their candidates to the first congress of attorneys," Portnov said.
