The Parliament of Ukraine changed the procedure for election and dismissal of the speaker of the Parliament.

As the ForUm correspondent reports, the draft law on amendments to the Rules of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine (concerning the election, appointment and dismissal of officials of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine) was supported by 255 MPs.

This law amended the Articles 75, 77, 79 of the Rules of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine.

From now on, the speaker of the Parliament will be elected by the public roll-call voting by the majority of the MPs of the constitutional composition of the Verkhovna Rada.

The former rule stipulated that a decision on candidates for the post of the speaker of the Verkhovna Rada shall have been made by secret ballot. To elect the speaker, at least 300 MPs shall have voted in favor of the decision.

The adopted law changes the procedure for adoption by the Parliament the decision to dismiss the first deputy and the deputy speaker of the Verkhovna Rada and introduces the possibility of simultaneous election of the Parliament’s speaker.

The explanatory memorandum to the law states that "the consequence of the adoption of the law will be bringing into conformity with the Constitution of Ukraine the provisions of the Rules, as well as improving the procedures for the election of the speaker of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, the first deputy and the deputy speaker of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine and their dismissal."
