The drilling of the first shale gas well in Ukraine will be started in September 2012, the Prime Minister of Ukraine Mykola Azarov told a briefing after the opening of the Chervonodonetsk gas booster station at the Shebelinka gas field in the Kharkiv region.

"Ukraine will produce its own shale gas. Maybe we will think over the shale oil production. It is quite interesting and promising idea," Azarov said.
As reported, the U.S. Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador to Ukraine John Tefft said that under the actual conditions, the unconventional gas production is an important factor for the Ukraine's independence.

As a reminder, Ukraine has announced the tender for signing production sharing agreement to develop Yuzovsk and Olessk gas fields on February 23, this year.

The inferred resources of the Yuzovsk field (covering Kharkiv and Donetsk regions) are estimated at 4.054 trillion cubic meters of gas. It is planned to involve at least 1.6 billion USD of investments for geological exploration of the field and 30 billion USD for its industrial development.

The inferred resources of the Olessk field (covering Lviv and Ivano-Frankivsk regions) are estimated at 2.98 trillion cubic meters of gas. It is planned to involve at least 1.3 billion USD of investments for geological exploration of the field and 25 billion USD for its industrial development.

In late April, it was reported that the requests for tenders for signing production sharing agreement to develop Yuzovsk and Olessk fields have been already filed by five transnational companies: the Shevron and the ENI for the Olesk field; the Exxon Mobil, the Shell and the TNK-BP for the Yuzovsk field.
