The problem of protecting the rights of sailors is one of the most urgent in Ukraine, Ukrainian Parliament Commissioner for Human Rights Nina Karpachova told a press conference "State of observance and protection of mariners' rights in Ukraine", ForUm correspondent reports.
According to the official, the sailors are one of the most vulnerable groups of migrant workers.
"There are about 100 thousand mariners in Ukraine, and the majority of them are migrant workers," she informed.
According to Karpachova, the rights of mariners are leveled, they are captured in other countries, got imprisoned, suffer and die there.
"Every fifth member of a crew, captured by sea terrorists is a Ukrainian citizen," the official informed.
Therefore, the Ombudsman believes it is necessary to take steps to protect the rights of sailors, in particular to revive the national fleet, to adopt a national comprehensive development program for the Navy, to ratify the Convention on maritime labor, to raise the level of legal knowledge among the sailors, etc.
