Kyiv and Moscow have held consultations on the removal of barriers in mutual trade between the Customs Union and Ukraine, the press service of the Russian Ministry of Industry and Trade has reported.

"Consultative meetings were held in Kyiv on the removal of technical barriers in mutual trade between the Customs Union and Ukraine," reads the statement, UKRINFORM reports.

The consultations were attended by representatives of the Russian Federation, the Eurasian Economic Commission and Ukraine. Information on the system of the technical regulation of the Customs Union was presented during the talks.

The Russian delegation said that the European model was chosen as a model during the formation of the system of the technical regulation of the Customs Union. "The sides noted that the technical regulations of the Customs Union had been brought into line with European directives on product safety. The Customs Union seeks to achieve compatibility with the European system of technical regulation, which corresponds to the objectives of Ukraine," the ministry reported.

The Russian ministry said that the use of the Customs Union technical regulation system could help not only remove technical barriers in mutual trade with Ukraine and the member states of the Customs Union, but also greatly simplify harmonization with the European Union.

During the meeting, the sides also discussed the main provisions of the draft agreement on the removal of technical barriers in trade. "The Ukrainian side showed its increased interest in the possibility of using at the first stage of the technical regulations of the Customs Union on an alternative basis," the ministry said.

After the meeting, the parties agreed to set up a joint working group to study issues related to the elimination of technical barriers in mutual trade, determine the conditions under which Ukraine's accession to the technical regulations of the Customs Union would become possible, as well as to jointly develop an algorithm of the use of the technical regulations of the Customs Union with respect to mutually supplied products.
