If we arrange an atmosphere of national consensus and understand the conditions of further development of relations with the European Union, we will guarantee a conscious approach to the Ukraine-EU Association Agreement, Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Volodymyr Lytvyn said, commenting on the initialing of the Agreement, ForUm learned from the parliamentary press office.

"As the parliament does not have the initialed text of the Agreement which was accessible only to the narrow diplomatic and governmental circle, I can appreciate only the very fact of initialing this unusually bulky document," Lytvyn said. "Let me remind that the respective statement of the Verkhovna Rada puts emphasis on its importance."

The speaker noted that "it would be unpatriotic and unfair not to welcome completion of the technical work upon the Agreement, considering that thousands of experts devoted five years to it; however, initialing should be welcomed as a conclusion of a kind of a memorandum on understanding between the Parties concerning the principles of association."

The speaker also prioritizes completing technical comparison of the economic part of the Agreement, with Ukraine's interests being guaranteed. "It should be followed by a conscious, strict, full, and systemic obedience of these principles and fulfillment of commitments. If the Association Agreement is treated in such a manner, its signing and subsequent ratification by all the European Union member nations will make sense," he said.

"To support such a conscious approach to the Agreement and its principles and commitments, we should arrange an atmosphere of national consensus in Ukraine, with all political forces and people understanding the conditions of further development of relations with the European Union and other partners and neighbors," Lytvyn stressed.
