U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine John Tefft has said that the United States is ready to support the Ukrainian Defense Ministry in reforming the Ukrainian Armed Forces.

He announced this at a meeting with Ukrainian Defense Minister Dmytro Salamatin on Thursday, the press service of the Ukrainian Defense Ministry reported, according to UKRINFORM.

"We are ready to support the Ukrainian Defense Ministry in reforming the Armed Forces," he said.

According to the diplomat, Ukraine and the United States managed to achieve success in cooperation in the defense sector.

"Our cooperation during international exercises and other events on maintaining peace and strengthening security helps improve the international situation," Tefft said.

In addition, he welcomed Ukraine's peacekeeping initiatives.

While informing the foreign diplomat about priorities in the reform of the Ukrainian army, Salamatin said that Ukraine was currently completing the drafting of a new strategy for the reform and development of the Armed Forces for the period until 2017, which envisages the creation of a mobile and effective army that would meet the current challenges and requirements.

He also said that the Armed Forces of the new model would be staffed exclusively with servicemen on contracts.

The sides expressed confidence that bilateral defense cooperation between Ukraine and the United States would develop dynamically in future.
