On March 15, 1939, in the town of Khust a remarkable event in the history of Ukrainian statehood occurred: the independence of Carpatho-Ukraine was proclaimed, President Viktor Yanukovych has said in his speech on the 73rd anniversary of declaration of Carpatho-Ukraine, ForUm learned from the presidential press office.
The President reminded that this republic, according to its founders, was to become the center of unification for all Ukrainian lands into a single unified state.
"The short but bright history of Carpatho-Ukraine, its defenders’ courage and heroism was a demonstration of our fellow citizens’ unbreakable aspiration for freedom and the revival of their own state," Yanukovych said.
The President underlined that the principle of unity of all strata of the people for the sake of achieving a common goal proclaimed by the founders of Carpatho-Ukraine is still true nowadays.
"We all need to realize that only through joint efforts will we overcome the problems currently facing Ukraine, open new prospects of our country, and provide worthy life for each citizen," Yanukovych stressed.
