Ukraine is interested in developing energy cooperation with Turkmenistan, President Viktor Yanukovych said during today’s Ukrainian-Turkmen talks in Kyiv, ForUm learned from the presidential press office.

"We are very interested in cooperation to develop the fuel and energy complex. The potential that Ukraine has can be fully involved in Turkmenistan developing the extraction and transportation of natural gas," he stressed. Viktor Yanukovych in particular noted that Ukraine is ready to take part in the projects to develop gas fields in Turkmenistan and provide the appropriate equipment of domestic production.

The President also said Ukraine is interested in contributing to the construction of the second line of the Malay-Bagtyyarlyk gas pipeline (a part of the Central Asia – China gas pipeline) and the Turkmen section of the East-West pipeline that will also run through Afghanistan, Pakistan, and India. In addition, Ukraine is interested in participating in the modernization of the Mary Hydroelectric Power Plant’s 5th unit, he said. "We are ready to continue supplying Ukrainian equipment for the construction ... This is another project that is very important and interesting for us," said Viktor Yanukovych.

The President drew attention to the growth of trade turnover between Ukraine and Turkmenistan. According to him, it has tripled in 2011 – up to $1.2 billion compared with 2010.
