Radical reform and modernization of the Armed Forces of Ukraine is a priority of the national security policy, President Viktor Yanukovych said during his today’s visit to the Ivan Bohun Military Lyceum in Kyiv, ForUm learned from the presidential press office.

Among the main goals of military reform in Ukraine, President Yanukovych named the creation of combat-ready, mobile, well-equipped armed forces that can effectively defend the country and take part in international peacekeeping and security operations.

Another important component of the reform according to the President is optimizing the mechanisms of funding the defense sector to ensure the best addressing of its needs with financial capabilities of the state in mind.

"In 2012, we are to increase the funding of the Ukrainian army by nearly 3 billion hryvnyas. One of the first priorities here is modernization and weapons upgrading," Viktor Yanukovych said.

Yet another priority of the reform, Viktor Yanukovych said, is to optimize the administrative structure of the Armed Forces, improve staffing policy and social protection of Ukrainian servicemen, etc.
