Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Volodymyr Lytvyn held a meeting on Monday with Sergei Naryshkin, Speaker of the State Duma of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation, ForUm learned from the press office of Ukrian's parliament.

"Your visit is very important in terms of both political and personal relations," Lytvyn said. The head of the parliament considers it symbolic that the visit of Naryshkin coincided with the twentieth anniversary of establishment of diplomatic relations between the countries. Lytvyn stressed that Ukrainian-Russian bilateral relations, including interparliamentary connections, should rise to a higher level and meet the interests of both Ukraine and Russia.   

The Parties declared that development of interparliamentary cooperation and collaboration in the international parliamentary forums PABSEC, CIS IPA, PACE, OSCE PA is an essential component of strategic partnership.

"The interparliamentary dialogue should be given new substance," the Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine said.

The Speaker of the State Duma of the Federal Assembly emphasized that his visit to Ukraine is his first official foreign visit in office of the speaker. He said that it proves that relations between our states are strategic. "We highly appreciate the level of inter-state and interparliamentary relations," he said.  

Ukraine's and Russia's speakers have signed a joint statement on enhancing the status of the Chairman of the Interparliamentary Commission on Cooperation between the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine and the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation to the level of the Heads of the Parliaments.

"Taking into account the importance of Interparliamentary Commission on Cooperation between the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine and the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation for the development of interparliamentary connections, and strategic partnership between Ukraine and the Russian Federation, the Chairmen of the Verkhovna Rada and of the State Duma consider it appropriate to enhance the status of co-heads of the Interparliamentary Commission on Cooperation between the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine and the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation by introducing respective amendments to the Rules of Procedure," the statement reads.

During the meeting, the Parties noted that the first two meetings of the Committee are to take place in Voronezh and Dnipropetrovsk.

Volodymyr Lytvyn and Sergei Naryshkin also support the simultaneous ratification of the Free Trade Zone Agreement with CIS.

The parties stressed that ratification of the document will simplify trade conditions between the economic agents, and facilitate intensification of the trade and economic cooperation in general, and will allow to bring the dialogue to a new level.

In particular, the officials discussed the ratification by the Verkhovna Rada of the agreement on simplified procedure of border crossing for residents of border territories of Ukraine and Russia, and by the State Duma of the agreement on establishment and operation of historical and cultural centers. According to Lytvyn, Ukrainian Parliament intends to consider the respective agreement on February 22, and the State Duma in March.
