Promoting the establishment of high democratic standards in Ukraine is particularly important in the context of the coming parliamentary elections, President Viktor Yanukovych said at a meeting with the economic and administrative leadership of the Poltava region, according to the presidential press office.

"Government interference in the elections or any use of administrative pressure is unacceptable. We want to strengthened democratic standards in Ukraine and would like our partners to see Ukraine as a modern state that is moving in this direction," he said.

The President noted that it is important to improve national legislation to ensure the protection of citizens’ rights and freedoms, to adopt a new Criminal Procedure Code, laws on prosecution and the practice of law.

He also pointed to the importance of reforming the law enforcement. "The practice of human rights violation must become the thing of the past. We must get rid of this problem, we will work on that," he said.
