It is more profitable for Ukrainian thermal power plants to use coal for functioning than gas costing 1.5-1.6 thousand hryvnias per a thousand cubic meters, Prime Minister of Ukraine Mykola Azarov told journalists in Kyiv during his working visit to Darnitsa Central Heating and Power Plant, ForUm correspondent reports.

"Darnitsa Central Heating and Power Plant has already reduced gas consumption and switched to anthracite," the Premier informed and underlined that the plant is now working not worse than before producing 170 Mwatt.

"Most likely we will switch all thermal power plants to coal, which is a way cheaper," Azarov added.

The PM also paid attention to the ecological side of the problem, assuring that measures on ecological security will be improved. "Darnitsa Plant is situated in Kyiv, and 95% of the polluted emissions are being localized. According to our data, those thermal power plants working on coal clean the emissions by 90%. I cannot say that it is a smooth work without problems, but gas is not much better," Azarov summed.
