Ukraine intends in 2012 to launch a program to modernize OT-62 Topas armored personnel carriers for the Egyptian army.

According to Acting Director General of the Kharkiv-based Malyshev Plant, Mykola Belov, the armored vehicles will be modernized as part of a contract signed with the Defense Ministry of Egypt in January 2010 following an international tender, according to UKRINFORM.

The five-year contract with its possible extension is estimated at 200 APCs.

Under the contract, the modernization of the main part of armored vehicles will be conducted on the territory of the customer using vehicle sets produced in Ukraine.

"The pilot batch of upgraded armored personnel carriers in the amount of three vehicles was delivered to the customer in 2011. Serial upgrades, and the issue concerns about 197 vehicles, are scheduled to begin in Egypt in the summer of 2012," Belov said.
