The European Commission for Democracy through Law (Venice Commission) on the whole approved the draft law of Ukraine on the principles of the national language policy worked out by members of the Party of Regions faction, Serhiy Kivalov and Vadym Kolesnichenko, Kivalov's press service reported on Saturday, according to Interfax-Ukraine.

"Today, the Venice Commission has expressed general support to our bill on the principles of the national language policy," Kivalov said.

"I hope that soon we will be able to adopt it at the Verkhovna Rada and to eliminate language issue in Ukraine," the lawmaker said.

According to the report, the commission's rapporteur speaking on behalf of all the experts of the Venice Commission said the bill offered government guarantees for the protection of regional languages and languages of national minorities in Ukraine. At the same time, the bill maintains the position of the official language of Ukraine, the rapporteur said.

"President of the Venice Commission Gianni Buquicchio said that the bill provided to European experts for the examination, is a step forward in addressing the language issue in Ukraine," the press service said.
