Foreign Minister of Ukraine Kostyantyn Hryshchenko does not believe that the Nord Stream pipeline is an alternative to transit of Russian gas via Ukrainian GTS.

"We stand for logical, rational and economically grounded position on that the shortest and ecologically safe route to supply Russian gas to Europe is through Ukraine's territory," Hryshchenko told a briefing.

The Minister noted that Nord Stream goes under the Baltic Sea, where there are a lot of preserved areas, World War II bomb shells and sunken chemical weapons. Hryshchneko opined Nord Stream was not the best solution to secure gas supplies to Europe.

"We don't see any critically important alternative to our gas and transport system. Hence Russia cannot meet the needs of Europe without Ukraine. Another question is how to take into account the interests of all sides and to make the supply system satisfactory for all," Hryshchneko said.
