The Ukrainian side has received assurances from the new Libyan government that 22 Ukrainians detained in this country will be released after the completion of an investigation into their involvement in military operations in Libya, Ukrainian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Oleksandr Dykusarov said at a briefing on Tuesday.

"It gives us some optimism that the case is advancing rather effectively," he said, UKRINFORM reported.

Dykusarov said that the situation with the Ukrainians in Libya currently remained unchanged. "Our diplomats regularly visit the Ukrainians," he said, adding that the Ukrainian side is constantly holding talks on the release of the Ukrainian citizens.

He also added that Ukraine expected the speedy formation of the Libyan government, which will certainly help accelerate the positive resolution of this issue.

As reported, in September 2011, the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry confirmed reports about the detention of 23 Ukrainians in Libya, one of which has already been released. According to diplomats, these citizens are civil engineers who arrived in Libya under contracts signed with a private company.

Ukraine has demanded that the detained citizens be released from custody and brought to the Ukrainian Embassy in Tripoli.
