The Executive Office of the Mayor of Washington, D.C. has decided this year to celebrate December 1 (the day of the All-Ukrainian referendum on independence) as Day of Ukraine in Washington, Secretary of the District of Columbia Cynthia Brock-Smith announced in her speech on behalf of the U.S. capital Mayor at a reception to mark the 20th anniversary of Independence of Ukraine, held in the Library of Congress, UKRINFORM reported.

The reception organized by the Ukrainian Embassy in one of the world largest libraries was attended by more than 1,000 guests, among them - representatives of the White House, U.S. State Department, Congress, foreign diplomats, the Ukrainian community, NGOs and the media.

In his congratulatory address, the Ambassador of Ukraine to the United States, Oleksandr Motsyk, focused on the Ukrainian foreign policy priorities, including European integration, the strategic partnership of Kyiv and Washington, Ukraine's commitment to interests of global peace and security. The chief of diplomatic mission expressed gratitude to the Ukrainian diaspora in the US for their contribution to the development of Ukrainian-American relations, the formation of Ukraine as an independent and democratic state.

On the occasion of the 20th anniversary of Independence, this year the Ukrainian Embassy in the United States had already conducted more than two dozen cultural and artistic activities, including art and photo exhibitions, concerts with famous Ukrainian performers. The plans by the end of the year include an exhibition of science and technology of Ukraine, tour of Donetsk Ballet to the US and Days of Ukrainian Cinema.
