Ukraine and Moldova are working intensively to address the pressing issues of border demarcation. In particular, Cahul, Moldova, is currently hosting a meeting of plenipotentiary representatives of the two sides, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Moldova to Ukraine Ion Stevile told UKRINFORM Thursday.

"These days Cahul is hosting a regular meeting of the mixed demarcation commission. In particular, the sides are discussing issues of border areas near the village of Giurgiulesti and Novodnistrovsk hydrosystem," the ambassador said. However, he noted that this process is rather complicated and long because it depends on many factors: the positions of the parties and their readiness to reach a compromise, as well as technical difficulties of putting the boundary line. The diplomats forecast that to complete all these processes at least another two years are needed.

As previously reported, Kyiv and Chisinau have recently achieved a significant progress in addressing issues of "problem" sections of the common border. Thus, early last year, the sides started the demarcation of 452 km of the central section of the Ukrainian-Moldovan border, which runs along the Transnistrian region of the Republic of Moldova. This June, the Moldovan side signed a document to determine and fix the boundaries on the Odesa-Reni highway section nearby the village of Palanca, Moldova, as well as land section on which it runs.

In this context, Ambassador Stevile said that recently the Ukrainian and Moldovan sides have discussed the arrangement of joint control activity at a checkpoint near Palanca. These processes, he said, are given a significant support from the EUBAM (EU Mission Border Assistance Mission to Moldova and Ukraine).

In the context of bilateral relations, the Moldovan diplomat also praised the role of Ukraine in the Transnistrian conflict settlement. He recalled that Moscow will soon host an informal meeting in frames of the 5 +2 format (Chisinau, Tiraspol, Ukraine, Russia, the OSCE, and the EU and the U.S.). "The upcoming meeting is scheduled to discuss the formal resumption of the 5 +2 negotiations," Ambassador Stevile emphasized.
