Freedom House President David Kramer has said that the Ukrainian authorities are planning to imprison former Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko at any cost.

"Last year, they first investigated the purchase of ambulance vehicles bought by the government of Yulia Tymoshenko, then how Kyoto money was spent, then there appeared a case on gas contracts, and it's also necessary to add to this the investigation concerning her business activities in the 1990s. This creates the impression that the country's current leadership intends to prosecute her anyway, condemn, and imprison, prevent her from participating in the next presidential race and deprive her of any chance of returning to power," he said in an interview with the Ukrainian Week publication, Interfax-Ukraine reported.

Kramer said that this created the impression that the Ukrainian authorities are using the judicial system to "persecute their opponents," including former Interior Minister Yuriy Lutsenko and others.

"The trial of the ex-premier has just attracted the most attention," he said.
