President Viktor Yanukovych has initiated the reduction of the Armed Forces of Ukraine by 8 thousand persons in 2012, including by 5 thousand soldiers.
President Yanukovych has brought in a draft law On the Strength of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in 2012 to the Verkhovna Rada as urgent.The draft law proposes to reduce the strength of the Ukrainian army to 184 thousand persons, including to 139 thousand soldiers by the end of 2012, and must be implemented in the framework of the 2012 State Budget expenditures.
According to the draft law, the Armed Forces reduction is planned through the optimization of command and control bodies system, elimination of duplication of functions and reduction of management units, creation constant readiness units and mobilization reserve, optimization of structure and strength of combat units armed with worn weapons and machinery impossible or economically impractical to repair, etc.
